Panel de Caen

English below

A longitudinal qualitative survey began in 1995 with a panel of young people living in Caen (Normandy, France). The same people were re-interviewed for 20 years.

This survey makes it possible to study in particular the links between life course and evolution of personal networks:

biographical process, changes, bifurcations, occupational integration, couple life, family, modes of sociability, and the creation and evolution of relationships with the social environments, the structuring and transformations of the personal networks, the dynamics of interconnections, and the effects of networks on the processes of socialization, as the transition to adult life progresses.

The survey respondents were then in the final year of general or vocational baccalaureate, or in training courses, half boys and girls. They were between 17 and 23 years old. Three years later, in 1998, they were contacted again and 73 of them were re-interviewed. Three years later in 2001, 66 of these young people participated again in the survey. A fourth wave of surveys was conducted in 2004, involving 60 of these young people. A fifth survey wave, which was smaller, was carried out in 2007. Then in 2015, a sixth survey wave was conducted with some of the respondents, those who were Facebook users.

Each time they were interviewed where they lived.

The survey methodology includes questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires retrace their trajectories month by month on calendars, combining information in the professional, family, loving, residential and associative fields and identifying all the important events that occurred during this three-year period. Their personal network is also constructed, in order to observe how it evolves according to transitions into adulthood and other less predictable events that occur.

This is followed by in-depth qualitative interviews in which the biographical and relational events and changes that have taken place in the course of adult life are discussed at length.
